Kimi Antonelli took the checkered flag at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday to win the Formula One U.S. Grand Prix. The victory for the Mercedes driver came under a cloud of political noise that overshadowed the racing for a brief moment on the podium.
U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, was selected to present the first-place trophy. As he stepped up to the stage, the crowd at the race track erupted in loud, sustained booing. Video from the event and eyewitness accounts confirm the noise lasted for approximately ninety seconds. The disapproval continued until Cruz handed the trophy to Antonelli, at which point the booing stopped and cheering began.
Formula One commentator David Croft noted the reaction during the live broadcast on Sky Sports. He observed that the crowd was casting an early vote. “Midterms are coming up; people are already voting with their voice,” Croft said. The sentiment reflected a growing pattern of public frustration with Cruz in Texas. He had also been booed in September during a live interview on ESPN’s College Game Day.
Cruz appeared on that sports show to promote the Protect College Sports Act. The bill has already passed the Senate but still needs final approval in the House. Critics of the legislation argue it limits the earning potential of student athletes and blocks them from forming unions or engaging in collective bargaining. Despite his popularity issues, political observers note that Cruz is actively positioning himself for a second presidential run, even though he is not on the midterm ballot.
The senator was not the only target of the crowd’s attention during the day. Eyewitnesses on social media reported booing when Cruz was announced as a dignitary at the event. By the time he reached the podium, the energy had shifted from general anticipation to specific political protest.
Following the race, Cruz posted on X to describe the day as a personal outing with his daughter, Caroline. He did not mention the booing in his update. “Incredible day at the Austin Grand Prix with Caroline. Perfect Dad-daughter afternoon,” he wrote. He added that the racing world was watching Texas and congratulated Antonelli on the win, calling the trophy presentation an honor.
The race concluded with Antonelli securing the victory. The event took place at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, a venue known for drawing large crowds from across the state. The political reaction on Sunday adds another data point to the ongoing conversation about Cruz’s standing among Texas voters.
