A single pit stop strategy allowed the 20-year-old Italian to defeat Charles Leclerc at the Circuit of the Americas, securing a commanding advantage with five races left.

Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, extending his lead in the Formula One drivers' championship to 123 points over George Russell.
The 20-year-old Italian driver started from pole position and finished the 56-lap race in 1 hour, 35 minutes, and 16.650 seconds. Charles Leclerc of Monaco finished second, 13.078 seconds behind Antonelli. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing completed the podium in third place, 17.485 seconds off the pace.
Strategy determined the race outcome. While rival teams executed two pit stops, Antonelli remained on track until Lap 25. He made a single stop and finished the race without returning to the pit lane. Antonelli credited his team for the tactical decision. "It was a perfect way to end the weekend; it was an incredible team effort, especially from strategy to believe in me and go for one stop," he said.
The result places pressure on Mercedes teammate George Russell of Great Britain. Russell must win the next race in Mexico City to remain in contention for the title. If he finishes in second place or lower, Antonelli will be crowned world champion. This marks the second consecutive year without a title for four-time champion Max Verstappen, who is now mathematically eliminated from the fight.
Verstappen cited tire performance and overall pace as factors in Red Bull's result. "Our overall pace was not good enough, and the tyres we had available were not the right ones," he said. He noted that a Virtual Safety Car triggered on Lap 52 by Valtteri Bottas's Cadillac stopping on the track may have aided his podium finish. The VSC remained in effect until the penultimate lap.
Mercedes extended its advantage in the constructors' standings to 133 points over Ferrari. The German team holds 607 points compared to Ferrari's 474. Antonelli has now won both United States races on the 2026 calendar, adding to a streak of five consecutive victories earlier in the season that included Miami. The next event is the Las Vegas Grand Prix in November.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised the performance, calling it the best race Antonelli has produced this year. "Getting off the start with the inferior tyre and then controlling it at all times. The race of a champion who isn't the champion yet, but exceptional," Wolff said. He stated that Antonelli outperformed the car's capabilities. Antonelli agreed, noting that while his home race win at Monza was special due to the car's speed, Sunday's execution was superior because of how the team built performance across the weekend.
