Milwaukee scored eight runs with two outs in a single inning, a World Series first, to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 on Monday night.
The offensive explosion gave the Brewers a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series after the game at Tropicana Field.
The inning began with Christian Yelich and William Contreras hitting opposite-field RBI singles on consecutive pitches in the third inning to put the Brewers up 2-0.
After an infield single by Contreras reversed a forceout call from the replay center, the Brewers loaded the bases.
Brice Turang then singled off the glove of shortstop Taylor Walls, who dropped to a knee and tumbled as the ball bounced past him into short center field.
Walls described the play as a knife in the chest, noting that he felt the ball glance off his glove.
Garrett Mitchell followed with an RBI single through the hole at second base, and Cooper Pratt hit a two-run double off the glove of a diving Junior Caminero.
The Brewers extended their lead with hits from Sal Frelick, David Hamilton, and Jackson Chourio, who finished with four hits in the game.
Milwaukee became the first team to score eight runs with two outs in a World Series inning.
The previous Series high was seven runs, set by Boston against Colorado in 2007 and matched by San Francisco against Texas in 2010.
The Rays have won their previous two games by one run at American Family Field, but they struggled to contain the Brewers' offense in the third.
Cam Booser, who relieved Freddy Peralta, said he felt like he let the team down in the quiet clubhouse after the loss. We've got a chip and a chair mentality, Rays manager Kevin Cash said, noting the team must win Game 4 to stay alive. Of the 25 teams that have fallen behind 3-0 in a World Series, 21 were swept. Only the 2004 Boston Red Sox have ever come back from a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven postseason series. Griffin Jax is scheduled to start Game 4 for Tampa Bay on Tuesday. He said the team will try to forget the loss and come back ready to fight.
