A McKinney High School student will not return to the district after police found a firearm on the campus on Wednesday. The McKinney Independent School District announced the decision to exclude the student from its schools following the incident.
McKinney Police Department officers detained the student after he arrived late at the school. He entered through the designated entrance, where an Evolv weapons detection system flagged a potential threat. Campus personnel responded to the alert and discovered the student in possession of a gun. They secured the student and recovered the weapon immediately.
The district noted that the student had only recently enrolled in McKinney ISD. Officials did not name the student in their communication with parents. A McKinney ISD statement affirmed that weapons are strictly prohibited on all district campuses. The district said it treats any violation of this policy with extreme seriousness.
District leaders credited the Evolv systems for identifying the threat before it reached the classrooms. They described the safety of students and staff as the top priority. The district also thanked campus staff and law enforcement partners for their quick response.
The McKinney Police Department continues to investigate the incident. The district has not provided further details on the specific type of firearm found or the student's reason for being on campus.
This incident marks the latest security stop at a Texas high school using automated screening technology. The school remains open to students while the investigation proceeds.
