A 17-year-old resident of McKinney has been taken into custody by the FBI on October 5 following allegations of a plot to assassinate North Texas Congressman Keith Self. The lawmaker, who represents Texas' third congressional district, is currently campaigning for a third term. His campaign officials confirmed the arrest, noting that the team was notified about the detention through U.S. Capitol Police on October 6.
According to details provided by the campaign, investigators believe the teenager had been radicalized and was under monitoring by federal agents. The teen was reportedly planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS and had targeted Self at a chili cook-off fundraiser scheduled for October 17. The event, designed to support veterans, was intended to feature former Cowboys players and other high-profile guests. The FBI's Dallas office has not yet released additional information regarding the matter.
Rep. Self confirmed that the situation necessitated an increase in security awareness. He stated that while he already had security personnel, his team adjusted their vigilance. 'So at that point we upped our profile and we're a little more aware, although I had plenty of security,' Self said. 'So we did change our situational awareness around us.'
Self attributed his calm response to his background in the military. He explained that having deployed to combat zones multiple times prepared him for such news. 'Having deployed into combat zones several times, I'm happy it happened to me because people that have never dealt with this before tend to freak out when somebody tells you that somebody's trying to kill you,' Self said. He noted that because the arrest occurred prior to the event, the primary concern was determining if the individual was a lone wolf.
Despite the alleged threat, the congressman proceeded with his schedule, attending the planned event on October 17. He recounted judging 19 chilies and three pots of beans during the gathering, stating that nothing happened. Self also continues to campaign, stating that he will not be deterred from his work.
Self has recently taken a prominent stance regarding Sharia law, having introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution in September to denounce its implementation. The district includes McKinney, a city where a vote on a new mosque expansion led to significant public debate and an effort to recall council members. Evan Hunt, Self's opponent in the midterm election, has also condemned the alleged plot on social media.
The identity of the teenager has not been publicly released as the investigation continues.
