City lights glow across the skyline as the results of the 2026 midterm elections reshape the political landscape in the South Central region.

Democrats have secured control of both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate in the November 2026 midterm elections, marking a significant shift in the balance of power in Washington. According to results compiled by Ballotpedia, Democrats won at least 43 House seats and seven Senate seats, all of which had previously been held by Republicans. This outcome gives Democrats a projected majority of at least 250 to 157 in the House and 54 to 44 in the Senate. The loss of seven Senate seats places this election among the top 20 percent of all election years in terms of seat swings against the president's party, a threshold often defined as a wave election.

The results signal a decisive rejection of the Republican administration's agenda by voters across the country. President Donald Trump is now facing a Congress dominated by Democrats who have promised to prioritize oversight of the executive branch. The president's administration has already begun adjusting to the new political reality, with Trump announcing the replacement of longtime adviser Susie Wiles with Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff. Miller, known for his hard line on immigration, is expected to drive the administration's agenda in the face of a hostile legislature. This leadership change follows a turbulent week in which Trump tried out a new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, who left the position after only five days.

In Texas, the largest state in the South Central region, voters participated in key races for the open U.S. Senate seat and the governor's office. Polls in Texas were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. The state's political landscape has always been a bellwether for national trends, and the 2026 results reflect the broader national shift toward Democratic candidates. While the specific winner of the Texas Senate race is not yet detailed in the immediate results, the state's performance contributes to the overall Democratic pickup in the chamber. Texas voters also decided the fate of incumbent Governor Greg Abbott, who faced a challenging path in a year defined by high national polarization.

Neighboring states in the South Central region also saw significant activity on Election Day. In Oklahoma, polls were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with voters deciding the open U.S. Senate seat and the open governor's race. Louisiana held its Tuesday elections with polls open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., focusing on the open U.S. Senate seat, while Arkansas polls were open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. for the Senate race involving incumbent Tom Cotton and the governor's race involving incumbent Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The consistent Democratic gains in these states indicate that the wave was not limited to traditional blue states but extended deep into the South and Midwest.

The Democratic victory in the Senate is particularly consequential for the administration's legislative goals. With 54 seats, Democrats will hold a supermajority, allowing them to override presidential vetoes and confirm judicial nominees without the threat of a filibuster. This power dynamic will be immediately tested by the administration's ongoing efforts to implement policies related to immigration and economic regulation. Democratic leaders have emphasized that the new Congress will focus on the cost of living and health care, areas where they claim to have a clear mandate from voters. The Republican money advantage, which was a key factor in previous cycles, proved insufficient to overcome the turnout and enthusiasm of Democratic voters in this election.

President Trump, while in West Palm Beach, Florida, reacted to the results by announcing his intention to offer the White House press secretary role to UFC boss Dana White. Trump posted on social media that he made the offer to White, calling him a violent fighter and warrior who could defend the administration against the lunatic left. Although the White House did not immediately confirm the offer, the announcement underscores the administration's desire to project strength and unity in the face of a new Democratic Congress. White, who was in London for a boxing event, shared an image of himself at the White House podium on Instagram, signaling his potential acceptance of the role.

The shift in congressional control also impacts state-level politics, with Democrats winning a majority of governorships for the first time since before the 2010 elections. Ballotpedia reports that Democrats won 22 of the 36 gubernatorial races decided, with five changing party control from Republicans to Democrats. This trifecta of power in both chambers of Congress and the White House opposition creates a dynamic that has not been seen in recent years. The new Democratic leadership will likely prioritize investigations into the administration's handling of the Iran war and other foreign policy decisions, areas where they have expressed skepticism about the executive branch's actions.

In Mississippi, the U.S. Senate race between Democrat Scott Colom and Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith remains a point of intense focus. Although the state is still tallying ballots, Colom is being welcomed as a historic figure who could become the first Black senator from the state since Reconstruction. The race highlights the deep divisions and high stakes of the 2026 elections, with both sides claiming victory as the count continues. The outcome in Mississippi, along with other close races, will further solidify the new composition of the Senate and the balance of power in Washington.

As the results are finalized, the new Congress will begin the work of shaping the legislative agenda for the next two years. Democrats have promised to move quickly on issues such as health care and economic relief for families dealing with high costs. The administration, led by President Trump and the new chief of staff Stephen Miller, will need to navigate a Congress that is united in its opposition to the president's signature policies. The coming months will be defined by intense debate and negotiation, as both sides seek to implement their visions for the country in this new political era.
