The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 on Monday night to take a 3-0 lead in the World Series. The victory puts Milwaukee within one game of its first championship title. The game was decided by a dominant offensive surge in the fifth inning, during which the Brewers scored eight runs.
Robert Gasser, a rookie left-handed pitcher, delivered one of the most efficient starts in recent postseason history. He allowed only one hit and faced the minimum 18 batters through six innings. This performance made him the first starter to face the minimum in six innings of a World Series game since Curt Schilling in 2001. He is also the first left-handed pitcher to achieve this feat since Sandy Koufax in 1965.
Gasser permitted a line-drive single to Yandy Diaz to lead off the first inning. He then retired 14 consecutive batters before issuing a walk to Victor Mesa Jr. in the sixth inning. The Rays scored their only run in the top of the ninth, but the damage was already done. Gasser became the first Milwaukee starter to record an out in the sixth inning during this postseason. He has allowed just one run over 15 innings in three road starts.
The Brewers' offense exploded against right-hander Freddy Peralta. The team recorded 16 hits in total, with William Contreras going 3 for 5 and Jackson Chourio hitting 4 for 5. Chourio became the second-youngest player in World Series history to record four hits and a stolen base in a single game, trailing only Ty Cobb from 1908. The Brewers have now won eight consecutive postseason games and four straight on the road.
The fifth inning set a postseason record with seven consecutive hits, all occurring with two outs. This marked the first time in World Series history that a team scored eight two-out runs in a single inning. The rally began with a single by Chourio, who later stole second base. Christian Yelich drew a walk, and Peralta was removed after Contreras reached on an infield hit. A replay review overturned an initial forceout call at second base, allowing the inning to continue.
Brice Turang drove in two runs with a single that bounced off the glove of shortstop Taylor Walls. Garrett Mitchell followed with an RBI single, and Cooper Pratt grounded out a double to left field for two more runs. Sal Frelick lined a run-scoring double to make the score 8-0. Rays manager Kevin Cash described the sequence as deflating, noting that the team's inconsistencies in the strike zone led to strong at-bats by the Brewers.
Peralta, who was named MVP of the ALCS against Cleveland, was charged with five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Cash noted that the pitcher appeared out of sync and tried to power through his issues. The Rays, who led the American League with 98 wins in the regular season, made uncharacteristic defensive and baserunning errors in the first two games of the series in Milwaukee.
Brandon Woodruff closed the game in the ninth inning, allowing one run and two hits. This was his first appearance in 3 1/2 months, returning from a shoulder injury that was initially expected to require surgery. The Brewers, led by 67-year-old manager Pat Murphy, now hold a historic position. Of the 43 previous teams to fall behind 3-0 in a best-of-seven postseason series, only the 2004 Boston Red Sox have recovered.
The Rays played in white Devil Rays uniforms before a sellout crowd of 40,388 at Tropicana Field. The stadium underwent major renovations after Hurricane Milton damaged the roof in October 2024. Despite the support from fans, the Rays could not overcome the Brewers' momentum. Tampa Bay has never won a World Series in its 29 seasons, with previous losses to the Phillies in 2008 and the Dodgers in 2020.
Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field. Griffin Jax is set to start for the Rays. A win for Milwaukee would make them the first team to sweep both the league championship series and the World Series since the 1976 Cincinnati Reds. The Brewers have won 103 games this season, leading the majors, and swept the Dodgers in the NLCS.
