Anthropic is preparing for a public listing that could value the artificial intelligence leader at as much as $2 trillion. This anticipated move, expected to take place later this year, stands to create a historic windfall for its investors. The company's most recent private market valuation sits at $965 billion, but the stakes held by various venture capital firms and early backers already represent billions of dollars in wealth. According to data from Bloomberg, the financial picture for these key stakeholders is already substantial before the IPO premium is factored in.

The numbers behind these holdings are staggering. At the current private valuation of $965 billion, the positions held by major investors translate into multi-billion dollar assets. For instance, a stake that was worth billions in the last private round could potentially double in value once the company goes public. This trajectory suggests that the upcoming listing will not only mark a major milestone for Anthropic but also serve as a significant financial event for the tech investment world. The gap between the current private value and the projected IPO price highlights the immense upside remaining for early entrants.

Among the most prominent names is Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google. Schmidt made his entry into Anthropic during the Series A round in 2021. At that time, the startup had a valuation of just $461 million, according to PitchBook data. His early investment has since grown into a holding that represents approximately 1% of the total company. Even without the boost from the IPO, Schmidt's stake is currently valued at nearly $10 billion, reflecting the explosive growth of the AI sector over the last few years.

Late-stage investors have also seen massive appreciation in their portfolios. Iconiq wrote a check for $6 billion to Anthropic just last year. At the time of that investment, the company was already valued at $183 billion. That significant bet has now grown to a value of $17 billion. Analysts suggest this position could double in value if the IPO proceeds at the high end of the valuation range. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested more than $1 billion over time. Their current stake is valued at $14 billion, solidifying their position as a major player in the company's capital structure.

Sequoia, a renowned venture capital firm, took a slightly different approach by entering the market earlier this year. They invested $3 billion when Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. This move secured them roughly 1% ownership of the firm. Despite the high entry price, the investment has already more than doubled in value. This demonstrates that even late-entry investors can achieve substantial returns in a market as dynamic as artificial intelligence. The timing of their entry aligns with a period of rapid expansion for the AI lab.

Other notable backers include Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher. They initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. Since then, they have funneled an additional $400 million into the company. Their combined stake is now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch his own new venture capital firm, but the original investment remains a key part of the company's history.

Spark Capital holds the only known board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at $5 billion. That initial position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion. This growth rate underscores the high risk and high reward nature of backing pre-revenue or early-stage AI companies. The diversity of these investors, ranging from tech titans to specialized VC firms, illustrates the broad appeal of Anthropic's technology and market position.

As the IPO date approaches, the stakes for all parties are clear. The potential for a $2 trillion valuation represents a historic moment for the tech industry. For the backers listed here, the transition from private to public markets will likely lock in some of the largest returns in recent memory. The coming months will be critical as Anthropic navigates the regulatory and market hurdles of a public listing. Investors will be watching closely to see if the projected valuations materialize, cementing the fortunes of those who believed in the company's potential from the start.
