Enzo Vargas became the first men’s tennis player in the history of the University of Texas at San Antonio program to win an individual conference title. The junior defeated No. 4 seed Victor Tosetto, 6-3 and 6-3, to claim the American Individual Men’s Singles Championship on Oct. 25.

Vargas entered the tournament without a seed, a distinction that required him to play one more match than the ten competitors who received byes into the second round. He is the second unseeded player in tournament history to reach the final. Despite the disadvantage, the Roadrunner won five consecutive matches to secure the trophy.

Two of Vargas’s victories required him to recover from a first-set loss. In the second round, he trailed No. 6 seed Rafael Botran of Rice University by a set before winning the match 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, he fell behind 0-4 in the opening set against Alex Nuñez of Tulsa. Vargas won the first set 6-3 after saving break points, then held the lead for the remainder of the tournament.

The path to the final included a semifinal victory over No. 2 seed Daniel Phillips of Tulane University. Vargas defeated Phillips 6-3, 6-4. In the final match, he faced Tosetto, a Brazilian compatriot with whom he grew up playing junior tennis.

Vargas described the final as a contest between two friends who shared a competitive history. The two players acknowledged a mutual desire to outperform the other during their youth in Brazil. Vargas credited that familiarity with the intensity of the matchup.

Coach Nick Castro, who joined the UTSA staff on Aug. 28, praised the depth of the competition. He noted that many participants are already playing professional tours. Castro said the team prepared by focusing on executing their own game plans rather than reacting to the high level of opposition. He emphasized that the victory was a result of consistent execution rather than a single moment of brilliance.

Vargas attributed his success to maintaining physical intensity and managing the pressure of unseeded status. He stated that losing the first set against Nuñez helped him find a rhythm for the subsequent sets. He said the sensation of the ball felt right during the decisive points, allowing him to stay close in the score and finish matches effectively.

The championship adds to a strong fall season for UTSA Athletics, which also claimed conference titles in baseball, soccer, and women’s basketball. Vargas’s achievement marks a new benchmark for the men’s tennis program, which finished with a 5-15 record as a team last season.

Vargas has earned a berth in the ITA Conference Masters tournament in Rome, Georgia, which begins on Nov. 5. Reaching the semifinals in that event will qualify him for the NCAA men’s singles championship. He expressed confidence in his ability to compete at the national level, citing his preparation and familiarity with opponents who are also attending the event.

The next step in Vargas’s season is the ITA Conference Masters. He will compete against the other conference winners in an attempt to secure a spot in the NCAA tournament. The outcome of that weekend will determine his path toward the national championship.
