No. 3 Georgia used four Florida turnovers to beat the No. 17 Gators 27-8 on Saturday in Atlanta, with Chris Cole's 66-yard fumble return for a touchdown the most decisive moment of the game.

The play came late in the first half. Florida's second quarterback, Tramell Jones Jr., fumbled when he was sacked by Quintavius Johnson, and Cole scooped up the ball and ran it in. It was the second long fumble return for a score this season for Cole, who also took one back 85 yards in Georgia's 41-13 win over Oklahoma on Sept. 26.

Georgia improved to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the Southeastern Conference, bouncing back from a last-second 27-24 loss to Auburn on Oct. 17. Florida fell to 5-3 and 3-3 in the SEC. The Gators had hoped to follow their 27-24 upset of No. 7 Texas with another win over a top 10 team, but could not do it. Georgia outrushed Florida 217-48 and has now won six consecutive meetings in the series.

Aaron Philo returned as Florida's starting quarterback after missing the Texas game with a right shoulder injury, and he struggled. He was benched after throwing two interceptions. The first came on an underhanded heave under pressure and was picked off by Ellis Robinson IV. The second sailed high and through the hands of Eric Singleton Jr., and Demello Jones intercepted it. Jones then replaced Philo.

Jones had turnover trouble of his own. After the fumble returned for a touchdown with 29 seconds left in the first half, he guided a long third-quarter drive that ended when his pass from the Georgia 3 intended for Singleton was intercepted in the end zone by cornerback Braylon Conley.

Bo Walker and Nate Frazier each scored on 1-yard runs as Georgia built a 24-0 halftime lead. Florida running back Jadan Baugh, an Atlanta native who entered the day leading the SEC with 13 rushing touchdowns, was held to 38 yards on 17 carries.

Georgia's first turnover came early in the fourth quarter, when Talyn Taylor fumbled after a short catch and was hit by DJ Coleman. Myles Graham returned the recovery 42 yards. Jones then connected with Luke Harpring on a 23-yard fourth-down pass, which set up his own 2-yard touchdown run to end Georgia's shutout bid. Baugh passed to Dallas Wilson for the 2-point conversion.

The game was played with the roof closed at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, turning the rivalry known as the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party into an indoor event. The usual neutral site of Jacksonville, Florida, was unavailable because of renovations at EverBank Stadium. Next year's game is set for Tampa Bay, and the series will then return to Jacksonville. Tickets were split 50-50, though Georgia appeared to have a slight edge in turnout.

For Florida, the turnovers and five first-half penalties for 60 yards proved too much to overcome with the running game stalled, and the loss puts the Gators at risk of dropping out of the Top 25. Receiver Vernell Brown III missed his fourth straight game with a sprained right knee.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart set an aggressive tone by going for it on fourth-and-1 from the Georgia 34 on the opening drive. Frazier gained 3 yards, though the drive ended with a missed 43-yard field goal by Peyton Woodring. Quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 13 of 23 passes for 101 yards and ran for 40 yards in the first half, compared with 39 for all of Florida. Running back Chauncy Bowens (foot) and receiver Thomas Blackshear (collarbone) did not play. Florida hosts Oklahoma next, while Georgia visits No. 12 Mississippi, which beat Auburn 45-15.
