Idaho voters decided on Tuesday to designate the Winchester Model 1873 as their official state firearm, a choice that landed on the ballot alongside major partisan races. The lever-action rifle, frequently referenced as the weapon that helped settle the American West, defeated five other contenders in a contest that drew national attention for its specificity.

The ballot presented six distinct options to residents. The losing candidates included the Colt Single Action Army revolver, commonly known as the Peacemaker, and the M1 Garand. Other choices featured the Colt .45 and additional models, creating a varied field of historic and modern firearms for voters to select from.

The victory for the Winchester 1873 places Idaho in the company of ten other U.S. states that have adopted an official firearm. Texas and West Virginia are among the jurisdictions already listed in this category. Pennsylvania also holds an official state gun, a designation that surprised some observers who might have expected more rural states to lead the trend. Florida, despite its large population and gun ownership rates, does not currently have an official state firearm.

The election occurred against a backdrop of a challenging midterm cycle for the Republican Party. While Democrats made gains in several key races, Idaho’s Republican incumbents maintained their hold on state legislative seats. The state gun vote served as a distinct cultural marker within the broader political results, offering a tangible symbol of state identity separate from the partisan shifts seen in other regions.

The selection process highlights a growing trend among state legislatures to formalize specific symbols of regional heritage. While many states have long had official birds, flowers, and foods, the adoption of a specific firearm as a state emblem is a more recent development. The presence of the Winchester 1873 on the ballot reflects a local preference for historical artifacts associated with frontier expansion and settlement.

The result was determined by the aggregate vote of Idaho residents who participated in Tuesday’s election. The specific margin of victory for the Winchester 1873 was part of the overall tally returned from polling places across the state. This designation joins a list of other official state symbols that Idahoans use to define their geographic and cultural character.

The outcome stands as a concrete example of how ballot measures can address niche cultural questions during high-stakes election nights. The choice was made by the electorate rather than by a legislative committee, placing the decision directly in the hands of voters. The Winchester 1873 is now the recognized official firearm of the state of Idaho.
