Google Policy Shift Opens Door To Ad Targeting

The company's updated terms allow the use of personal data for ads if users enable certain AI personalization features.

Google has altered the fine print governing how it handles user information, a move that could result in advertisements appearing based on personal content. The company updated its privacy policy to modify a long-standing commitment regarding specific services. According to the modified text, which was updated on October 16, Google will not utilize data from Drive, Gmail, or Google Photos for personalized advertising, unless the user explicitly chooses to make that data available to other Google services that support such advertising.

This revision represents a significant change from the platform's previous stance. The prior version of the policy stated a blanket prohibition against using content from those specific repositories for ad targeting. The current language, however, introduces a conditional exception linked to the activation of specific artificial intelligence features. This shift was identified by Android Authority.

The policy update is directly tied to the expansion of Google's artificial intelligence capabilities. If a user enables Google's Personal Intelligence feature, they allow tools like Search and AI Mode to access personal information. This access is intended to help these tools provide better recommendations and more relevant responses. Under the new terms, granting this level of access for AI assistance also permits the processing of that content for the purpose of serving personalized advertisements.

Google has outlined specific boundaries regarding how this information is shared. Advertisers are not granted direct access to files within Drive, Gmail, or Photos, nor are they given personally identifying details such as a user's name or email address. Furthermore, the policy states that advertisements will not be displayed based on sensitive categories, including race, sexual orientation, religion, or health.

The updated policy text explains that allowing services like Search or Gemini Apps to access data from other services, such as Workspace apps or Photos, is done to provide a more personalized experience. The text notes that depending on user settings, personalized ads may be displayed based on interests, activity, or personalized content derived from these Google services. For instance, a search query regarding mountain bikes could result in ads for sports equipment appearing on YouTube.

Users who wish to restrict this data usage have control over their settings. To prevent personal data from being used for targeted advertising, individuals can choose to disconnect specific applications from Search’s Personal Intelligence features. Alternatively, users can disable Personalized Recommendations entirely by accessing the Search Services Personalization settings page.

The policy change was made effective on October 16. No further information regarding additional changes to privacy protocols has been released at this time.
