Urban One’s new microseries, Power & Influence, uses 90 second clips to tell a story about corporate ambition and digital fraud in Atlanta.

The scripted series is set inside a Black creative agency and follows a group of professionals dealing with shifting loyalties and romantic entanglements. A central conflict involves a deepfake scandal that forces employees to question who is telling the truth. The format requires rapid delivery of plot points, leaving viewers to determine who is protecting their own interests.

Ivory Shields plays Nia Whitmore, a boss who prioritizes her career legacy over personal relationships. Shields describes her character as unapologetic and focused on maintaining control over her brand. Tanazia Madan plays Zuri Reynolds, an employee attempting to reinvent herself in a new environment. Madan says Zuri must balance her desire for a fresh start with old survival instincts.

The actresses discussed a key confrontation where Nia speaks down to Zuri. Nia tells Zuri that the South Side did not teach her standards. Zuri replies that the South Side taught her who not to play with. Shields called the scene a turning point where Zuri finally stands her ground. Madan said she was excited to shoot the moment because it gave her character a voice.

The series also examines how artificial intelligence impacts professional reputations. Madan noted that Zuri is familiar with deepfake technology and can recognize warning signs. Shields said Nia’s approach reflects a deep concern for protecting her legacy, even if she is less technically savvy. The actors said the short time frame forces them to pack emotion into every moment.

BOSSIP Managing Editor Dani Canada and panelist Carl Foreman Jr. hosted the discussion on The Black Watch. Foreman joked that he could work at the agency and offered to join the cast. Shields told viewers to look forward to a second season and warned that they should be prepared for unexpected twists. The series is currently airing on #BOSSIPTok.
