Nineteen inches of rain fell over a six-hour period near Crossroads, Mississippi, on the night of Halloween. The National Weather Service stated that this volume of precipitation far surpasses the local standard for a 1,000-year event, which is defined as 12 inches of rain in the same duration. Statistically, the probability of such rainfall occurring in any single year at that location is 0.1%, or one in 1,000.

The intensity of the storm led the National Weather Service to issue a Flash Flood Warning with a rare "catastrophic" designation. This classification signals an extremely dangerous flood with the potential for severe damage and a serious threat to human life. Despite the severity of the warning, the Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Office reported no injuries. They also noted that no major traffic disruptions remained as of Sunday morning.

Emergency responders received the alert through the Wireless Emergency Alerts system, which delivered direct messages to cell phones in the affected zones. The notification urged residents in the path of the rain to move to higher ground. Storm reports documented specific impacts in the area. At least one home on Buckbranch School Road near Humphrey Road flooded, with debris seen floating in the fast-moving water. Crews performed a high-water rescue on Humphrey Road, located about four miles northeast of Crossroads, as water levels climbed.

The West Hobolochitto River near McNeil also saw dramatic changes. Water levels rose by approximately 12 feet overnight. The river reached moderate flood stage before the levels stabilized. The National Weather Service explains that a 1,000-year rainfall event is a statistical term describing specific amounts and durations of rain. It does not automatically guarantee a 1,000-year flood, as actual water levels depend on local drainage, soil saturation, and watershed size.

While Pearl River County received the most intense rainfall, other areas experienced severe weather. Metairie recorded eight inches of rain in three hours, a amount classified as a 100-year event with a 1% annual probability. Meteorologists attributed the extreme rainfall to an active jet stream pattern influenced by strong El Niño conditions this fall. The jet stream positioned itself over a warm atmosphere and warm Gulf waters, creating ideal conditions for high moisture content and heavy precipitation rates.

The event concludes the immediate reporting on the Halloween night storms. The National Weather Service has finalized the precipitation frequency estimates for the region. The statistical analysis confirms the rainfall totals met the criteria for the rare classification.
