UT Austin will consolidate its medical operations into a single academic system named UT Dell Medicine. The rebranding unifies the university's existing clinics and the newly announced Dell Medical Center under one administrative roof.
The move accompanies a major construction project funded by a $750 million gift from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. Officials described this contribution as one of the largest endowments ever given to a U.S. university. The funds will support the Dell Medical Center, which university leaders call the future cornerstone of the medical network.
Dr. John Zerwas, chancellor of the UT System, stated that the new structure prepares the university for rising healthcare demands in the Austin region. He noted that the opportunity to build an academic health enterprise from the ground up is rare. The existing Dell Medical School will serve as the anchor for this updated system, while the clinical practice previously known as UT Health Austin will adopt the new name.
Dr. Claudia Lucchinetti, executive vice president for medical affairs, detailed the expanded services. Current clinics already offer orthopedics, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, pulmonology, and urology. The new hospital will add cardiovascular, cancer, neurological, and transplant care, along with advanced intensive care. Lucchinetti emphasized that the model aims to fix fragmented care where patients currently manage conflicting appointments and recommendations across different organizations.
The new facility will partner with MD Anderson Cancer Center to provide advanced oncology services locally. The hospital will also use artificial intelligence and advanced computing to focus on prevention and diagnosis. Once fully operational in 2030, the system is projected to triple the number of patients UT Dell Medicine can treat.
