Fifty-seven hundred and twenty people laced up their shoes on October 17 in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. The crowd gathered for the 24th Annual Fort Worth 2nd Chance Run, a 5K and 1-mile walk designed to spotlight the impact of organ, eye, and tissue donation.
The event united a specific group of stakeholders. Transplant recipients stood alongside donor families, healthcare professionals, and donation advocates. All participants supported the mission of LifeGift, a nonprofit organ procurement organization that serves 109 counties across North, Southeast, and West Texas.
One story anchored the day’s narrative. Avery Overn received a liver and portal vein transplant in April 2026. Her family shared their journey with the crowd, illustrating the direct connection between donation and survival for recipients and their loved ones.
LifeGift operates with hospital partners and communities to raise awareness and offer hope through donation. The organization emphasizes the critical need for donors in the region. More than 11,000 Texans currently wait for a life-saving organ transplant.
Volunteers and cheering spectators helped facilitate the run. The group worked together to highlight the thousands of Texans who rely on the hope brought by organ, eye, and tissue donation. Participants can register as donors through the organization's website, DonateLifeTexas.org.
