Israeli security agencies have intensified scrutiny of foreign intelligence networks operating within the country. The State Attorney’s Office filed an indictment against an Israeli lawyer on Monday.
The Central District Court in Lod received the charges for contact with a foreign agent and obstruction of justice. The lawyer was arrested by Israel Police and the Shin Bet nearly two and a half weeks prior to the filing.
The prosecution requested that the defendant remain in detention until the legal proceedings conclude. The court has maintained a gag order on the case at the request of security authorities. Only a summary of the charges has been permitted for public release.
The announcement did not specify the foreign agent's affiliation or the details of the alleged interactions. Investigators determined that the lawyer engaged in acts of obstruction during the inquiry.
This indictment follows a series of cases involving alleged Iranian recruitment efforts. Prosecutors have recently described schemes where Israelis were contacted via social media and messaging platforms. Offers of payment were made for assignments ranging from photography to violent acts.
In April, two young Israelis faced charges after being approached through a Telegram group. The main defendant allegedly received money for illegal assignments, while the second helped prepare forged documents with classified information. In February, Elimelech Stern received a three-year prison sentence for contact with an Iranian operative. His case involved assignments compensated with cryptocurrency.
