OpenAI seeks record $30 billion funding round

The AI giant is negotiating a massive private investment that would set a new benchmark for pre-IPO valuations.

By Kendra Konchanuk ·

OpenAI is reportedly on the verge of closing a historic private funding round that could push its valuation to 1.25 trillion dollars. This move signals a shift in strategy as the company prepares for a public listing, prioritizing a massive capital injection over an immediate stock market debut. The round is expected to raise up to 30 billion dollars, a figure that would solidify its position as the most valuable private entity in history.

The new financing is being led by Coatue, with significant participation from investors based in the United Arab Emirates. Sources indicate that these Gulf-based backers are not just providing capital but are also negotiating a deal to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from the region. This dual approach suggests a strategic partnership that goes beyond simple investment, potentially giving the AI lab greater access to the infrastructure it needs to power its models.

This latest development follows similar reports from a month ago, which suggested the company was working toward a 30 billion dollar raise at a slightly higher 1.4 trillion dollar valuation. While terms are still under negotiation and may shift, the current trajectory points to a valuation that would shatter existing records. If finalized at this level, OpenAI would surpass previous benchmarks for private companies, setting a new high bar for its upcoming initial public offering.

The timing of this raise is critical as OpenAI moves through its pre-IPO preparations. The company filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, shortly after a previous funding round in March that valued the ChatGPT maker at 852 billion dollars post-money. By securing another massive round before going public, OpenAI aims to enter the stock market with a stronger financial foundation and a higher entry price, which could attract significant investor attention.

The implications of this move extend beyond OpenAI itself. A valuation exceeding one trillion dollars would raise the stakes for other major AI players, particularly Anthropic. Many industry observers believe Anthropic is close to its own public debut, with rumors suggesting its S-1 filing could appear any day. CNBC reports that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between 1.5 and 2 trillion dollars for its initial listing.

Anthropic’s path to the public market has also been aggressive. In May, the company raised 65 billion dollars at a 965 billion dollar valuation, a round many believed would be its last major private offering before an IPO. Like OpenAI, Anthropic also filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June. The race between these two giants for public capital is intensifying, with both companies aiming to establish themselves as the dominant forces in the AI landscape before their respective stock debuts.

OpenAI has declined to comment on the specific details of the new round. However, the consistent reports from multiple financial outlets suggest that the negotiations are well advanced. The potential tie-in with UAE computing resources highlights a growing trend where capital and infrastructure are becoming increasingly linked in the AI sector. As terms are finalized, the market will be watching closely to see if the valuation holds or adjusts further in the final stages of the deal.
