Former President Barack Obama criticized the Trump administration on Wednesday for prioritizing a response to a joke about White House decor over his arguments regarding national inflation. Speaking at a rally in Morrow, Georgia, Obama pointed out that officials had not disputed his claims that the current leadership is directly responsible for rising prices.
Obama noted that the administration failed to argue against the idea that tariffs contribute to higher costs for families. He stated that he accused the government of engaging in high levels of corruption based on available facts, yet no one addressed those specific points.
"They mobilized a whole-of-government response to that joke, not to inflation, but to that joke," Obama said. He observed that the president seemed less bothered by a comparison to Saddam Hussein than by the reference to a popular restaurant chain.
The dispute originated during a rally on Saturday when Obama suggested that gold embellishments in the White House made the building look like a Cheesecake Factory. That comment triggered a multi-day reaction from the White House and other Republicans.
President Trump lashed out at the former president on Monday, claiming he fixed the building with the finest artisans in the world. Trump said the property was in horrible shape before he took office. That same day, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited a Cheesecake Factory location and praised it to reporters.
Obama addressed the visit with a quip, asking why the official responsible for lowering inflation was told to hold a press conference in front of a dessert shop. He also dismissed claims from conservative commentators, including CNN host Scott Jennings, who suggested the remark was elitist. Jennings had written that Obama had never been to the chain and excelled at condescending to regular people.
Obama clarified that he was a longtime patron of the restaurant along with his two daughters. "I lived at Chuck E. Cheese and California Pizza Kitchen and the Cheesecake Factory. That was my jam for about a decade," he told the crowd. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
