Ayelet Kroizer, a former soldier in the Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson's Unit, is set to become the new spokesperson for Breaking the Silence. The organization is active in promoting “war crimes” charges against Israel internationally. Kroizer announced her upcoming role in an X/Twitter post on Monday. She used the platform to criticize her former unit's handling of public information.
In her announcement, Kroizer accused the unit of manipulating information presented to the public. She stated that the group prioritized the army's public image over transparency. Kroizer claimed that her service exposed her to the extent of the IDF Spokesperson's control over public perception. She described the unit's approach to truth as a “problematic game.”
Kroizer specifically addressed the unit's work with international audiences. She claimed the goal was defined as strengthening and expanding legitimacy for military actions. “Here, too, the price was the truth,” she wrote. Kroizer also noted her background as a member of the haredi ultra-Orthodox community. She had forgone her service exemption to enlist in the IDF during wartime.
IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Effie Defrin responded to the announcement with an urgent letter to unit commanders. The letter was sent for dissemination to all soldiers in the unit. Defrin stated that Kroizer's remarks do not reflect the people who serve in the unit, its values, or its professional and ethical worldview.
Defrin emphasized that the unit comprises individuals from all walks of Israeli society. He noted that the soldiers share a common ethical and professional compass. “This diversity is a source of our strength,” he wrote. He urged the troops not to let Kroizer's remarks shake them or diminish their sense of purpose.
