Federal prosecutors in Georgia have charged a former Atlanta television personality's ex-husband with filing false tax returns, a move he says stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of how petroleum accounting works.

The legal dispute began in November 2022 when Simon Guobadia married Porsha Williams. Their union lasted 15 months before Williams filed for divorce in February 2024. The separation process culminated in June 2025, when Williams secured a seven-figure settlement and retained their shared Atlanta mansion.

Following the divorce, Guobadia faced immigration complications. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained him during a return trip for a hearing. He was deported to Nigeria in 2025 and currently cannot legally re-enter the United States.

On October 27, the Department of Justice indicted Guobadia in federal court in Georgia. Prosecutors allege he knowingly underreported income on two separate tax filings while his company, Simcol Petroleum Limited, generated substantial revenue.

Court documents state that in March 2021, Guobadia reported $0 in taxable income. At that time, prosecutors claim he knew his earnings were higher. A second filing in July 2021 listed $58,231 in taxable income, while Simcol Petroleum Limited recorded nearly $31 million in gross sales. The indictment asserts he understood his actual income and sales figures exceeded the reported amounts.

Guobadia responded to the charges by citing his background as a CPA and former tax accountant. He stated in a statement that he is confident the Department of Justice misinterpreted his financial records. He argued that oil companies do not overstate costs or federal taxes and that his deductions can be independently verified. He noted that industry margins are thin, meaning high sales figures do not equal high taxable profits.

He criticized the public attention on the case, calling the resulting impression of his business dealings grossly exaggerated. An arrest warrant has been issued for Guobadia, though it is unclear if he has been taken into custody. The federal charges remain pending, and his claims regarding Simcol Petroleum's financial reporting have not yet been independently verified.
