Donald Trump does not know if JD Vance will run for president in 2028.
The president made the comment on Wednesday, one day after Democratic voters secured a historic victory in the midterm elections. That win gave Democrats control of both houses of Congress, a result that signals voter dissatisfaction with Trump.
"We will see what happens. We do not know who will run. There are a lot of people. Maybe nobody will. Maybe he will not run, I do not know," Trump told reporters at the White House when asked about Vance's political ambitions.
The 2028 presidential race is now open because the current president cannot run again under the two term limit. Despite this rule, Trump has said several times that he wants to seek another term.
Polls show Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are the leading contenders for the Republican nomination. Neither man has officially announced a candidacy. During the midterm campaign, Vance said he had not decided whether to run but believed Trump would support him if he did. Trump later stated that the two men had not discussed the matter.
The midterm results set the stage for the succession race. Democrats hold the House and the Senate. Republicans still hold the White House. The 2028 contest will determine who follows Trump after his second term ends.
